Zinc is the fourth-most common metal in technological use after iron, aluminium and copper. It is found in
solid form at room temperature and combines with oxygen and other non-metals. It is a ductile and
hygienic metal and withstands exposure to acids and cleaning products. For these reasons zinc continues to
be widely used still today.
When exposed to open air zinc covers itself with a patina that protects the underlying layers, thus making
this metal suitable for corrosive environments.
